Different Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most durable restoration options for missing teeth.

They are fixed to the jawbone, most closely imitating real teeth.

However, there are multiple types of dental implants.

What are the different types of implants?

Read on to learn more about dental implant options.

Dental Implant Options

One factor for different implant options is the positioning of the implant. Here are the three positions to choose from:

Endosteal: Endosteal implants are the most common, and they are the ones placed directly on the jawbone. They’re screwed into the jaw, which helps preserve the bone over time. However, they require significant healing time and bone density.

Subperiosteal: This is the second most common dentral implant option. These implants are placed under the gums, but not into the jawbone. This can be a good option for patients with low bone density.

Zygomatic: The least used of the different types of dental implants are zygomatic implants. For this process, the implant is placed in the cheekbone. It’s a difficult procedure that is often only used as a last option.

Materials for Different Types of Dental Implants

In addition to positioning, the material of dental implants may vary. The two most commonly used materials are titanium and zirconia.

Titanium is a popular choice because it fuses well with bones. It offers excellent durability while also being lightweight. However, some people are allergic to it. Furthermore, titanium isn’t a good option for those with autoimmune diseases.

Zirconia is a newer material that is metal-free. Zirconia dental implants only have one piece, so they are faster to install. However, the longevity of this material has yet to be fully tested for implants. It’s also more expensive than titanium.
